- Employability of College of International Hospitality Management Graduates (BSHRM 2005 – 2009): A Tracer Study By: Dr. Mark Irvin Celis (2011)
One of the factors that determine the effectiveness of an academic institution is through the employability of its graduates. The quality of graduates is very much a function of quality instruction and facilities because these will help ensure that graduates are equipped with the knowledge, skills and values that will enable them to work in their respective field. This study primarily determined the employability of the graduates of Hotel and Restaurant Management of Lyceum of Philippines University from 2005-2009. Specifically, it sought to determine the job placement profile of the graduates and relevance of school related factors to job placement. It also identified the work related values and skills that contribute in meeting the demands of the present job. Furthermore, this research proposes a program to improve employment rate for Hotel and Restaurant Management graduates of LPU.This tracer study used the descriptive research design. Results showed that majority of the respondents are gainfully employed and landed a job from one to two years after graduation. Most of them are on contractual basis and are working in the Philippines. Majority are professionals working as rank and file in HRM establishments. Majority are still holding their first job after graduation. Salaries and benefits play a big role in staying or leaving the first job. Most of them are earning 15,000 pesos –less than 20,000 pesos per month. Human Relations skills and communication skills are deemed to be the most useful competencies learned by the graduates from LPU; perseverance was the highest work value for the respondents. Languages play an important role in their work. Professional subjects are relevant for job placement and the faculty member’s communication and mastery skills proved the most important in terms of school related factors in terms of faculty and instruction. All school related factors to the job placement of Hotel and Restaurant Management graduates were deemed to be relevant. The employment rate of Hotel an Restaurant Management from 2005 – 2009 of LPU is considered employable and this study aimed to propose a program that would enhance the future employment ratings of its graduates. In this way, the College of International Tourism and Hospitality Management must strengthen their services and focus on quality instruction with the support of research and community extension.Based on the findings the researcher recommended that the CITHM may regularly update once a year the status of their graduates and ask for possible curriculum enhancement programs they could offer at the College. The CITHM faculty may encourage the students to be more motivated to work hard and persevere in whatever task and project assigned to them to develop their sense of responsibility and leadership. Their competencies may be further strengthened through exposure to various competitions and other related training and seminars. Further students should be encouraged continue to participate in the English Proficiency Programs to further enhance their oral and written communication skills. Work skills and values of the HRM students must be further emphasized in the application of the outcomes based curriculum. Faculty Members teaching General Education and Professional Subjects may be encouraged to continue to update and enhance teaching skills through various re training programs facilitated by the university. The CITHM must continue to tap linkages that will bring possible employment opportunities for its graduates. Lastly, the proposed program may be implemented and be evaluated after at least one year of implementation. Keywords: employability, hospitality management, curriculum, graduates

- Competency-Based Curriculum Enrichment of HRM Education in the Context of Asian Hospitality Business Experiences By: Dr. Dexter Buted (2010)
One way at looking into the functionality of a college course is to make a research study on learning tasks based on current and world-wide practices in the industry. To simply depend on current practices in the Philippines is an inward approach to curricular reforms. This can be achieved through intensive research with the end in view of matching the desired competencies and match them with learning tasks bodied forth in Philippine HRM education. It is for this reason this international study is proposed as a source of curricular reforms with international touch. The study employed the qualitative or non-numerical data collection in order to describe the competency-based curriculum of Southeast Asian countries as Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam and Singapore. Data was collected from direct observation and interview among managers and top position administrators of hospitality industries during the Asian tour visit of the researcher. The philosophy of education in Southeast Asian countries is developing the potential of individuals in a holistic and integrated manner, to achieve the fullest potential for all by giving quality education to provide high quality human resources and to help their students discover their own talents, make the best of these talents and realize their full potential. The competency-based curriculum of Southeast Asian countries exerted their effort to match the skills provided in education and training with the skills required by the industry and world of work in order to improve the image of technical education by integrating vocational and technical education with general education. They also practice benchmarked strategies against international practices through various consultations. Others also inject international flavour in the curriculum of their programmes in order to attract international and local students, implement a balanced curriculum that emphasizes the “hands-on” as well as the “heads” skills, the science and technology-based skills and practical oriented assessment towards improving and imparting values and skills through a forward-looking curriculumThe business experiences provided by the Southeast Asian countries in revising their curriculum to match industry requirements served as an avenue for the researcher to understand the university role of coming up with a curriculum as by-product of benchmarking and exploration. Keywords: Competency-based, Curriculum Enrichment, HRM Education, Business
- A Survey of the Batangas Province Tourism Industry: Basis for Improved Tourism Program By: Mrs. Sevilla Felicen and Ms. Angelie Marie Vizconde (2010)
The Philippines is a developing country with an economy anchored on agriculture but with substantial contributions from manufacturing, mining, remittances from overseas Filipinos, service industries such as tourism and, increasingly, business process outsourcing, to which it is known for having one of most vibrant. Not too many people associate travel and tourism with business and commerce. This study focused on the different tourist destination in the Province of Batangas visited by local and foreign tourists. It further looked into the facilities, services offered by these tourist attractions and how it affects the influx of tourist in general. Likewise, it determines the socio-cultural and economic development of the province in particular.Based on the results, majority of local and tourist visitors in Batangas are male and most of them are from different provinces. The most frequently visited attraction is beach resorts for it is a venue for diving as an aqua sports activity. Batangas is visited due to affordability of the tourist attractions and destinations. Either local or foreign tourists were satisfied and enjoyed their visit in the place. Most of the respondents agreed that improving standard of living is one of the economic benefits from the development of tourism industry and employment to local folks. The researchers recommend that local residents and other private sectors should be part of the planning and organizing program and projects for the continuous development of the province without destroying the resources instead protecting the culture and heritage. Each municipality of the Province of Batangas as well as the owners of private attractions should further develop their attraction by providing higher level of awareness to the residents so that the identified destinations be appreciated and visited by many tourists. Keywords: Batangas Province, Tourism Industry, Tourism Program
- Tourist Attraction Business in the CALABARZON Region: Basis for Strategic Planning By: Dr. Mark Irvin Celis (2010)
The study aimed to determine the prospects of developing a strategic planning framework of the tourism business in the CALABARZON region as basis for designing a development plan. It determined the status of the tourist attraction business in the CALABARZON region with regard to: types of tourist attraction business, average of tourist arrivals per year, business linkages, and services offered; to determine the marketing practices of the tourist attraction establishments; to identify problems met in the management and operation of the tourist attraction business; to determine the prospects of tourism business in terms of: status of the business, tourist arrivals, marketing practices, and logistics; to propose a strategic planning framework to enhance the prospects and sustainability of tourism attraction business in the CALABARZON region. The study analyzed the realities of the tourism attraction business in the CALABARZON Region in quantitative and qualitative terms. As a case study, it used research triangulation through survey, interview and documentary analysis to be able to gather the data and information needed for the study. Results showed that the tourism attraction business at the CALABARZON Region as represented by the eleven enterprises showed that no one among them offers more than three types of tourism attractions. Three of them offered spa and resort spa, while two of them offered recreational club. Others offer one each attraction such as theme park, museum, and zoological park. In terms of visitor arrivals, five tourism enterprises accommodated half a million up to 1.5 million of tourists a year, while four accommodated less than 500,000 tourists a year. Two of the 11 enterprises accommodated more than one million annually. The Department of Tourism (DOT) and travel agencies appeared as the best linkages to tourism enterprises, followed by transportation companies and schools. The restaurants and hotels also served as linkages to tourism firms but not as active as those of DOT and travel agencies. Of the services available, all tourism enterprises had shops for souvenirs, food services, and entertainment facilities and services, while 10 of them offered medical treatment and services and parks. Nine of the 11 enterprises had chapel or prayer room, health and recreation facilities, and spa and wellness services. The rest of the 11 tourism enterprises offered room and cottage accommodation while some of them offered transportation services and rides. As to marketing practices, promotion appeared as most frequently used followed by price. These two marketing mix constructs evolved as the first-two that were always used by the tourism operators. Other marketing mix practices that were often used centered on certain marketing mix practices such as place, partnership, product, people, and programming in that order. The prospects of the tourism business in the region is high considering the status of the business, tourist arrivals, marketing practices used; and logistics. The problems met in the business may be clustered into two such as problems with employees and problems in operations. The problems met in human resource management centered on high turn-over of employees, tardiness of employees, and lack of seasoned labor force. All the three problems are interrelated as the first was the cause and the two others were the consequences. The rest of the problems with employees were lack of training, AWOL, employees’ lack of initiatives and poor comprehension among others. The proposed strategic plan framework is rather comprehensive enough to provide the tourism business operators a guide upon which to base their future courses of action. HEIs must be aware of the paradigm shifts, a shift from national to global education sufficient to revolutionalize the higher education industry since it demands the role and functions of the HEIs to be redefined to cope up with the new process of change. HEIs should also develop the knowledge of students by continually providing them training and supervised work-experience with globalized context. The performance rating of the practicum student must be improved through strengthening the trainings provided by the HEIs and preparing the practicum students with the specific requirements of the host country. Skill level of the SIAP participants should be noted prior to the beginning of the training, training goals and the implementation of the training must be reviewed regularly to make sure that it affirms a more detailed and specific end results. Revised performance evaluation instrument should accurately measure the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of the practicum students for the HEIs to know the areas to address to produce globally competitive graduates. Proposed enhancement was also designed by means of new subject/s that maybe infused to enhance the tourism curriculum in Lyceum of Batangas. The study used the descriptive method of research utilizing SWOT Analysis. The findings revealed that, there is a renewed tourism development in the different sectors (accommodation, attraction, transport, travel organizers and destination organization) in the tourism industry in region IV-A (CALABARZON). However, with the growing number of facilities in the accommodation, attraction, transport, travel organizers sectors in the industry, only very few are accredited by the Department of Tourism. Tourist arrivals continue to increase through the years with Cavite and Laguna consistently the most visited provinces. In January to September 2005, region IV got 26.62 percent or 2,255,966 tourists of the total one hundred percent tourist arrival in the country. With the renewed tourism development in the area, tourism graduates of Lyceum of Batangas have good employment prospects and opportunities in the tourism industry in Region IV-A (CALABARZON). The Major courses offered in the tourism program relatively are more relevant tp the needs and demands of the tourism industry than the minor courses. The goals/course objectives and all the other curriculum components of the tourism program of Lyceum of Batangas are responsive to the needs and demands of the tourism industry. Airport Services Operation and Management is the new subject to be infused to the present tourism program. On the basis of the findings and conclusions the researchers strongly recommend that the Department of Tourism and Local Government offers more incentives to encourage the accreditation of the different service providers/organization in the tourism industry to improve their services and give them better chances of local and global competitiveness. That the Regional (Region IV) Tourism Office intensify its tourism promotion and marketing campaign for Region IV-A as a tourist haven with diverse attractions. Those local experts in target countries must be hired to promote the Philippines instead of merely naming television celebrities as tourism envoys. Teacher training must be conducted periodically by the college for all teachers teaching minor and major subjects. The average and even low weighted mean obtained by the minor courses are clear indications that the teachers were not successful in making the students appreciate the essence of the subjects that they are teaching. PBL (Problem Based Learning) method should be introduced to the teachers so that students will appreciate better the subject or courses they are taking. Keywords: Tourism Development, Region IV, Tourism Graduates, Tourism Industry
